It’s been a while since I made dehydrator dog treats!

I don’t know why. I love to make dehydrator dog treats because they are quick, easy and you can “set it & forget it”. The dogs love them because they’re meaty and delicious.

They had frozen salmon on sale at our local grocery store this week, so I jumped at the chance to buy up a bunch and make a big batch of homemade dog treats. All it takes is 5 minutes prep and they drive my dogs wild. Kolchak will do pretty much anything for a piece of these Salmon dog treats.

Salmon dog treats are a huge hit at Casa de Kolchak.

But the dogs rarely get them. They’re just. so. pricey. I get it! Fish shrinks a lot when you dehydrate it, so it takes a whole lot of fish to make a small amount of treats, plus deboning fish can be a bit of a pain, but so important in making a safe finished treat. That’s why I was so thrilled to find frozen deboned salmon filets as this week’s sale.

I always use frozen or canned salmon when I’m making dog treats.

Particularly here on the West Coast, where Salmon are prone to something called salmon flukes – a parasite that is transferred to your dog can be fatal. The parasite is killed by deep-freezing the fish for several months or fully cooking it. I can’t be too careful, so I like to do both.

How to make Salmon Dog Treats in the Dehydrator

Salmon Jerky Dehydrator Dog Treats

These dehydrated salmon jerky dog treats are so easy to make and are a delicious, healthy treat to give with your dog.

Prep Time10 minutes Cook Time10 hours 6 seconds Additional Time15 minutes Total Time10 hours 25 minutes 6 seconds

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. frozen salmon
  • OPTIONAL:
  • 1 tbsp. real maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp. low sodium soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Remove salmon from the freezer and allow to thaw for 10- 15 minutes, until pliable, but still frozen. (This will make it easier to slice.)
  2. Slice the salmon across the width into 1/4″ – 1/2″ strips.
  3. Place salmon in the dehydrator and set it to the highest temperature or “meat” setting. Dry salmon for 6 -10 hours until cruncy and dried all the way through.
  4. Preheat your oven to 275F and place salmon treats on a baking sheet. Allow the oven to come all the way to temperature, then cook treats for 15 minutes to kill off any harmful bacteria.
  5. Allow treats to cool completely before storing or packaging.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in a dark space for 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to three months.
