Every year, I make an Advent Calendar for my dogs.
One year, I made a wreath with Treats on it. Another year, I wrapped and tiny boxes with a bone in each and unwrapped one each day. It’s become a tradition of ours.
But what do you do when you want to keep up the tradition, in the easiest way possible?
We’ve been busy this year. Too busy. I haven’t had time to get out the Christmas decor, much less to handcraft an Advent Calendar.
Luckily, there is a SUPER easy way to make a DIY (ish) Dog Treat Advent Calendar.
Here’s what you need:
- 1 Chocolate Filled Children’s Advent Calendar
- 1 Package of small dog treats
- Glue stick or tape
I decided to splurge and buy myself a Lindt Advent Calendar. I figured, I could save the chocolates in a dish, eat one every day and have an advent treat of my own…or you know, mindlessly eat 95% of them as I wrote this post. I also really liked that the Lindt calendar was almost twice as deep as the regular ones, meaning I could use a more substantial cookie inside. The Lindt calendar easily held a Fruitables treat (<–affiliate link) for each day, but if you decide to go with a standard advent calendar, I recommend the Cloudstar Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits (<–affiliate link), they’re the perfect size.
Use a craft knife to carefully open the bottom flap of the calendar. Some calendars use glue to hold the tray in place. You can gently lift the glue away by running a butter knife between the tray and the cover.
Gently pull the tray out and remove all of the chocolate pieces. Set them aside. **Chocolate is extremely dangerous to dogs, so ensure your dogs can not get into it.**
Wash the tray gently to remove any remaining chocolate, then dry it thoroughly.
Fill the trays with dog treats.
Slide the tray back into the cover. Glue or tape the bottom flat back in place.
If desired, use white out and markers to change “chocolate advent calendar” to “dog treat advent calendar)
Just like that, you have an easy (kind of lazy) dog treat Advent calendar.
Do you have any holiday traditions that you share with your pets?
