A few weeks back, we posted a few amazing human cookies and asked which ones you though we should “dogify”.

You answered LOUD AND CLEAR. You wanted Candy Corn. I don’t blame you. The inspiration cookies from Sweet Sugar Belle were absolutely adorable and they looked delicious too. (Dang it! Now I want cookies.) We shared a bit of our cookie creation process with you last week and revealed that we were trying to recreate these adorable candy corn treats in a dog friendly version. Well guess what? VICTORY IS MINE!

They’re cute right? I think they’re cute.

Let’s just start off by admitting that the “healthy version” with sweet potato, squash and turkey was a miserable failure. *miserable* Even Koly wasn’t interested in taste testing those suckers. That was cool though. It wasn’t my first recipe failure and it won’t be my last. Not by a long shot. I pushed forward with the cheese version, determined that it would be “the one”.  Oh yeah, it sure is.

These are the same treats made the easy way. They taste exactly the same.

The best part is that these are SO EASY or, I mean, they CAN be. Even though the Candy Corn treats are ridiculously cute, as it turns out, my dogs don’t actually care what the woof their treats look like. These treats only have to be as fancy as you want them to be.

How to Make Easy Cheese Dog Treats

Materials

  • 2 cups, finely shredded strong flavoured cheese (I used aged white cheddar for the candy corns and sharp orange cheddar for the cut out cookies.)
  • 2 cups Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp. water or chicken stock
  • optional (Candy Corns Only): Natural, dog friendly food colouring in Orange and Yellow or Annatto Powder

Instructions

Candy Corn Cookies:

Pre-heat oven to 325.

In a medium bowl, beat together egg and coconut oil. Add cheese and mix thoroughly. Stir in flour a little at a time, adding water or chicken stock as necessary to create a smooth dough.

Separate the Dough into three balls of varying size (Imagine a snowman). To the largest bowl, add a generous amount of orange colour and knead until the colour is smooth. To the medium ball, add yellow colour and knead until smooth. Try to work as quickly as you can. Over working doughs made with bean flours can result in one touch cookie ;0)

Use your hands to gently form the orange dough into a rectangular log, approx. 2″ wide x 1″ tall. Repeat with the yellow dough. Place the yellow log on top of the orange log.

Use your hands to shape the untinted dough into a 2″x1″ triangle. Stack on top of the yellow dough. gently work the dough, so that the entire log is shaped like a soft triangle. Wrap firmly in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 2 hours to chill.

After chilling, slice with the sharpest knife possible into 1/4″ slices. Use your hands or a rolling pin to flatten each slice gently (This helps to keep the layers together and gives your cookie a smoother surface.)

Place cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet and poke a few holes in each with a toothpick or a dough docker. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes, until golden brown on the bottom and cooked through. If desired, turn oven to lowest setting and leave cookies for 3 – 5 hours for a crunchier cookie.

Easy Peasy Way:

Pre-heat oven to 325.

In a medium bowl, beat together egg and coconut oil. Add cheese and mix thoroughly. Stir in flour a little at a time, adding water or chicken stock as necessary to create a smooth dough.

Roll out dough to about 3/16″ thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut into shapes (or a knife to cut the dough into squares.

Place cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet and poke a few holes in each with a toothpick or a dough docker. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes, until golden brown on the bottom and cooked through. If desired, turn oven to lowest setting and leave cookies for 3 – 5 hours for a crunchier cookie.

If there’s one thing that we all love at Casa de Kolchak, it’s cheese.

We’re fiends, the whole lot of us. I am constantly trying new cheeses in my quest to taste them all and often, if my pups are woofing lucky, I share. In fact, I love turning some of the tastiest cheeses I try into cheese dog treat recipes for Koly & Fe. One of favourite recipes is a gluten free dog treat recipe that everyone, humans and dogs alike enjoy.

This week, we made ours with Parrano cheese, a tasty smooth, creamy cheese that is like a cross between Dutch Gouda and sharp Parmesan. It was heavenly and it almost killed me to share it, but I did because I am a giver that way. 

These gluten free dog treats can be made with any type of cheese you like.

The Stuff (aka Ingredients)

  • 2 cups, finely shredded cheese
  • 2 cups Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp. water or chicken stock
  • optional: Natural, dog friendly food colouring (like India Tree Colours)

How We Do It (Instructions)

Pre-heat oven to 325.

In a medium bowl, beat together egg and coconut oil. Add cheese and mix thoroughly. Stir in flour a little at a time, adding water or chicken stock as necessary to create a smooth dough.

If desired, split the dough into separate balls and work in colours. Try to work as quickly as you can. Over working doughs made with bean flours can result in one tough cookie ;0)

Roll out dough to ~1/4″ thick and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter (or squares using a pizza cutter).

Place cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet. (For a flat treat that does not puff up, poke a few holes in each with a toothpick or a dough docker.) Bake for 20 – 30 minutes, until golden brown on the bottom and cooked through. If desired, turn oven to lowest setting and leave cookies for 2 – 3hours for a crunchier cookie.
