Some of my dog’s favourite dog treat recipes aren’t recipes at all.
Most of the time, when I make frozen dog treats, I just open the fridge and toss together whatever I happen to have on hand. If they really like it, I post it here and call it a “recipe”. I get a lot of emails from folks who visit our frozen dog treat recipe page and ask if I think substitutions will work.
“Can I use sweet potato instead of pumpkin?” Absolutely yes.
“My dog can’t have dairy, is there something else I can use?” Lots of possibilities!
“My dog doesn’t like peanut butter. Any ideas?” You may not have a real dog, but yes.
I love getting these emails. I love any time that someone wants to try making a treat for their dog. Unlike baked treats, which require a bit of cool science to make them work, with frozen dog treats, the answer to “can I substitute something?” is almost always a resounding yes.
So, I thought why not share a mix and match frozen dog treat guide? That way, everyone can choose the flavours they think their dog will love the best.
