I have a confession, you guys.
I put up my Christmas tree this weekend.
I know! I KNOW. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but y’all know, I’m Canadian, eh and our Thanksgiving was weeks ago, before Halloween and then Remembrance Day came and went and well, for us it’s straight on to Christmas!
I love it because it means I can get a jump start on holiday crafts without feeling guilty for brushing Turkey Day aside.
I’m starting off with something SUPER easy to kick the season off right.
These DIY Vinyl Decal Ornaments are SO EASY that making all three took me less than 5 minutes.
Here’s what you need:
- Small Vinyl Decals (I got mine at Stylish Canine)
- Clear Plastic Ornaments
- Acrylic Paint
- Styrofoam & skewers (or plastic cups)
This is how we do it:
Wash the ornaments and dry the surface carefully.
Apply the vinyl decal to the surface of the ornament and smooth using a credit card.
Carefully peel back the plastic, smoothing any air bubbles out as you need to.
If you’re like me and you’re tempted to skip a step, you can absolutely try using prepainted ornaments, but you have to be REALLY careful that you don’t touch the paint surface with the adhesive surface of the plastic…or this will happen and you’ll be mad as a hatter.
And so, I used clear ornaments, which was totally cool because that meant I could personalize them with my favourite bright green colour!
Remove the metal hanger from the ornament. Pour a generous squeeze of paint into the ornament and twist and tilt until the inside of the ornament is coated.
You can even get all fancy, if you want, using multiple colours or shades of the same colour.
Place ornaments top down into an empty plastic cup (if you were smart enough to remember to buy those) or you can stick skewers into a styrofoam block and sit the ornaments on the sticks (if you’re me). The excess paint will slowly drip out and the inside of your ornament will dry. (Mine took about 48 hours.)
Once they are dry, put the metal hangers back on your ornaments and hang as a part of your Holiday decor.
What’s your favourite Christmas colour combo?
Traditional red & green? Icy silver and blue? Something trendier?
