Almost three years ago, I shared a dog treat recipe that is easily one of our most popular, ever. Our canned food dog cookie recipe has just three ingredients, it’s so woofing easy and it has a flavour dogs LOVE. They’re great because they’re made with canned dog food, which means you can make them in any flavour your dog likes and choose a protein they can eat. For Felix, that means we can turn his favourite Wild Calling Pheasant or Rabbit canned dog food into his favourite cookies, so so easily.
It’s been pinned like a squillion times and I get a ton of emails asking one very specific question:
Now, because I am a little slow on the uptake, my answer has always been “maybe?”, “I dunno?” or “In theory, yes, I think they might be able to?” You know, in three years, it just never once occurred to me to try it? I KNOW RIGHT? I’m amazed at my own ridiculousness. I decided to give it whirl and see what happened.
You guys, you can TOTALLY make canned food dog treats with cookie cutters.
You just have to make one itsy bitsy change. Here’s what you need:
- 1 – 13 oz can of 96% meat canned dog food (This recipe was developed using Wild Calling.)
- 2 cups + 2 tbsp. Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Flour Mix or Regular White Flour
- 1 egg
Here’s how we do it:
Preheat oven to 350F and line a cookie sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.
In a bowl, mix together all three ingredients. I found mixing it with a mixing spoon SO FRUSTRATING, so I got in there and got my hands dirty.
Turn out your dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out to approx. 1/4″ thick and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.
Set cookies on the cookie sheet. (You can sit them fairly close together, as these don’t really spread.) Bake for 17 – 20 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown. If you prefer a crunchy treat, turn the oven down to 150F and bake for an additional 4 hours (or so) until cookies break crisp and are dry all the way through.
That’s it! These cookies are just THAT easy.
Does your dog have a favourite canned food that could become a cookie?
