Every dog I know LOVES jerky.
And every dog owner I know wants to give their dog the best. In an ideal world, that would be simple. You would go to the store, you would buy a quality jerky treat for a good price and every one would be happy. *Cue Angel chorus*
This isn’t a fairytale though.
And that’s not exactly how it works. Even though they’ve claimed to change, I still don’t trust the brands that misled and lied to us. That’s why, I make jerky at home.

A dog can’t live by chicken alone! One of the keys to training success at our house is that I am always changing what we offer as treats. So in addition to our DIY chicken jerky dog treats, I also make beef jerky for dogs (and a bunch of other jerkies, but that is a story for another day.)
Cilantro-Ginger Beef Jerky Dog Treat Recipe
- 1 1/2 lbs. beef (I used stir fry beef that was pre cut, but you can totally use whatever is on sale.)
- 3 tbsp. finely chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 tbsp. peeled, grated fresh ginger
- 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp. honey
This is how we do it:
Place the beef into the freezer for 20 – 30 minutes. Slightly frozen beef is much easier to cut evenly. Slice in thin strips.
Place beef, ginger, and cilantro into a plastic bag. Drizzle in honey and oil and toss meat until coated.
Place in the fridge to marinate for several hours or overnight.
Lay the beef on your dehydrator trays.
Cook for 4 – 6 hours, flipping once until beef is dried through and pliable, but stiff.
Blot with a paper towel to remove any residual oil.
Preheat oven to 275F and place jerky on a baking sheet. Allow the oven to come fully to temperature, then bake treats for 10 minutes to kill off any harmful bacteria.
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to three monthss.
