I taught my dog to jump through a hoop for the annual Trick or Treat Giveaway and I am so freaking excited.

Every year, we team up with Jessica, Luna, and Ralph from Beagles & Bargains and gather ’round the internets to promote how much FUN it is to teach your dog a cool trick, how great training is for your dog’s mental well being and how much it can do to help your bond. No matter how much of a A+ good doggo your pooch is, there’s no need to quit learning and tricks are the perfect silly skill to learn.

To make it extra interesting, we invite a bunch of dog blog friends to join in,  pair a bunch of really cute and easy dog trick tutorials with some faaaaaaaabulous prizes from some of our favourite pet brands and then we play Skeleton Jack as Sandy Claws all month long just for the boos.

And the giveaway party starts RIGHT NOW.

Prizes have been generously provided by Kong, Wellness Pet Food, Petcurean, Only Natural Pet, DogTV, Caru Pet Food, Treatibles, Noah’s Bark Dog Treats, West Paw, and Pet Lifestyle and You. All participating bloggers paid a fee to participate which funded our grand prize gift card.

Teaching your dog to jump through a hoop is actually SUPER easy.

All it takes us a hoop, someone to hold it (or stakes to hold it up), some high-value treats and a little patience. Kolchak (the smarty pants) picked it up in less than 10 minutes.

Teach Your Dog to Jump Through a Hoop

  1. Familiarization

Hold the hoop upright with the bottom rim on the ground and reward your dog for approaching or touching the hoop.

Repeat this step until your dog is 100% comfortable with the hoop.

  2. Luring

With the bottom rim of the hoop still on the ground, place your dog in a sit stay on one side and then reach through the hoop from the opposite side and lure them through with a treat.

Repeat until your dog is totally confident going through the hoop at ground height. I like to give an enthusiastic “yessssssss” when my dog gets it right, as I am too clumsy to hold a clicker and a treat.

  3. Leap

Raise the hoop a small distance off the ground and use a high-value treat to lure your dog through it while giving the leap command. Reward your dog with the treat and a happy “yes” every time they get it right.

If they go around the hoop, return them to the starting point and try luring them again.

Practice until you no longer need to lure them

  4. Add Height

Once your dog is confidently leaping through the hoop at a short height, try raising it slightly.

Keep practicing and raising the height as far as your dog is comfortable!

I know not everyone has someone always around to hold the hoop while you lure your dog.

It’s cool. I gotcha, Boo. ME NEITHER. That’s OK because it’s super easy to work around. I bought 1/4″ wood dowelling in a variety of lengths from the hardware store.

Then I drilled 2 x 1/4″ holes in the bottom of the hula hoop about 18″ apart.

Simply stick the dowelling in the holes and set into soft ground (like grass).

And now? With no further ado, let’s give some prizes away!!
